Jet Black iPhone 7 scratches easily

One of the new things about the just-unveiled iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus is the Jet Black color version, never before seen on an Apple mobile device. This certainly looks the part, employing a high-gloss finish that stands out from the crowd. Apple boasts that this is achieved “through a precision nine-step anodization and polishing process”.

That’s all well and good, but if you intend to grab a Jet Black iPhone 7 there’s one thing you really need to keep in mind – aside from the fact that you don’t get this finish with just 32GB of storage, you have to splurge for the 128GB or 256GB models.

Here’s what Apple has to say about the Jet Black iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in a notice on its official website:

Its surface is equally as hard as other anodized Apple products; however, its high shine may show fine micro-abrasions with use. If you are concerned about this, we suggest you use one of the many cases available to protect your iPhone.

In other words – expect the Jet Black finish to scratch. Easily. So as good as it may look, you’re going to either have to live with seeing scratches all over that high-gloss goodness, or simply hide it away in a case. Neither option sounds ideal, unfortunately.

  1. Yes, I remember the 3GS and the chrome edge that got scratches when I put it in a soft TPU case and took it out again. I think it was so bad that the phone would get scratched against your face if you forgot to shave before using the phone.

  2. If course it scratches if it’s hard. Waiting for a “scuffgate 2.0″

But if you don’t want to scratch it, put it in ugly case.

First companies always brag about finish/color or thickness, and then they “suggest” to use big ugly cases to protect it…

When Apple released high gloss products in the past, people complained that it scratched (even though Apple assumed people were smart enough to understand that from the start). Now they put a warning, and suddenly people are complaining there’s a warning? Lol, you haters will never be happy, so keep on hating. In the mean time, millions of people are enjoying. I know which one I would rather be doing.

I, on the other hand, expect good quality, that’s why a $800 device should not be put into a $5 case, it should be good enough to not need one.

  14. It’ll still sell no matter what happen. Most people goes “gaga” with apple logo on it.

  15. To be fair most people I see using iPhones have massive cracks all over the screen so a few scratches on the back shouldn’t bother them.

  16. and here hidden away in the little blog column….the power of the apple media dollar, all the news ,…totally positive. Yet the biggest , new, story of today is hidden, I suppose they must nake more room for extra Samsung battery stories eh. Public interest, the excuse for every media intrusion, yet here the front page was filled yesterday with only positive words about apple, ( wow whole pages..apple must be of great public interest.),today, those millions of potential buyers, have this crucial media buying info, hidden to the side, immediatly mittigated above it, then other stories to quickly push in down the page.Compliant media scum. Every poster here should do what they do with Samsung, post it it every thread, even out of context, just spread it, where buyers can see it especialy in every main spple or Samsung story. The moderators are lonely just blocking Samsung responses.
