The Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) has passed quite a few of the mandatory steps before going official – with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi certifications cleared, it also popped up on GeekBench and was also featured in a render video. Well, one of the preliminary units has apparently slipped out of the confines of NDAs and has gotten reviewed on video. Sadly, the video has since been taken down, but we’ll walk you through it.

First of all, it’s a Galaxy S7 lookalike, but we’ve already gotten a taste of that from the renders. We still don’t get a display diagonal, but initial data points to 5.2 inches, and Antutu reports a 1080p resolution. The Mali-T830 GPU has so far been used in the Exynos 7870 chipset, but since benchmark listings quoted a 7880 SoC, we’d conclude that it’s just an updated version of the 7870. There are 3GB of RAM on board and internal storage is 32GB, expandable via microSD. Speaking of Antutu, this A5 (2017) has scored just shy of 60,000 points in the popular benchmark.

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) – the current model

The reviewer praises the phone for its battery life (which is generally our own experience with the Exynos 78xx chips), but doesn’t seem to be a fan of the camera. Additionally, he complains about UI hiccups, noting that the A5 (2017) still runs on non-final software. Oh, it’s still based on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.

With test units of the Galaxy A5 (2017) out in the open like that, we’re expecting an official announcement before the end of the year.

  2. crap chipset with high price range..they should atleast provide snapdragon 650

  3. Anonymous, 5 hours agoBig Dissapointment. No nougat 7 ?!?!?!Tell one flagship from Samsung that have Nougat? None. This one obviously would not get Nougat, they are testing Nougat with Touchwiz Yet, they are not going to launch a phone with a OS version that it is Beta for them.

  4. Anonymous, 5 hours agoBig Dissapointment. No nougat 7 ?!?!?!Lol. Even almost all the flagships of famous android brands haven’t get Nougat update. Only major android brand like Nexus and Pixel should be getting it first. The others are LG, Huawei and Oneplus; and even that are for flagships only. Even S7 and S7 Edge still running on Nougat Beta. You expect a midrange to be running on Nougat out of the box? Please, do your research first before asking for the impossible. Dont act like every android phone already updated to Nougat except for Samsung. That is not true at all. No midrange smartphone newly released runs on Nougat this past months. Wake up! This is reality!

  8. Subham09, 5 hours agocrap chipset with high price range..they should atleast provide snapdragon 650If the soc is Exynos 7880, its the same configuration of snapdragon 652. 4 A72’s and 4 A53’s. So, tell me…. which is better , 7880 or 650 ?

  9. vyshak, 3 hours agoIf the soc is Exynos 7880, its the same configuration of snapdragon 652. 4 A72’s and 4 A53’s. … moreSD650 is old now (28nm) and overheat a lot ! It must be at least 625 (14nm) wich is more battery friendly and doesn’t overheat. The next flagship of samsung (s8) will use 10nm (SD830) !!!

  10. Anonymous, 4 hours agoMy god look at that ugly touchwiz it hurts my eyes You can install Nova launcher or other one if you want.

  11. Sorry but Antutu 60k is too weak for today situation. It’s a step up from last year 40k but not enough for a phone in that price range. I mean it is now able to compete with the flagship iPhone 5s from 2013 in terms of speed, and the 5s is cheaper.

  12. Iran Terres, 5 hours agoThe phone looks gorgeous though, at least the black model.

    yeah, i have A5 2016 black and it’s gorgeous, it takes a bit to get used to glass in the back (specially if u never owned one) but after the transition is amazing ^_^

  13. choanm, 5 hours agoTell one flagship from Samsung that have Nougat? None. This one obviously would not get Nougat… moreThis phone will be out on April worldwide most likely and nn nougat will be like old..

  14. Cheaper phones with same spec will be out sooner than this and will be nougat 7 out of box. After all Android 7 was out August~ , Marshmallow was October

  15. trumpomania, 3 hours agoSD650 is old now (28nm) and overheat a lot ! It must be at least 625 (14nm) wich is more batte… morewell… another point that S650 is hexa (2+4) while 7880 is Octa (4+4). and quite a bunch of rumors claim the next 800 series snapdragon would be called 835. ^^;

  16. Anonymous, 1 hour agoNobody will pay >300 euro in April/May 2017 to get old OS.Nobody will pay just for the OS.
