Moto phones sold in China may soon run ZUK’s custom software

Lenovo runs three smartphone brands semi-independently – its own Vibe line, the Moto phones and the ZUK brand. It has considered many different ways to brings Vibe and Moto together (to leverage Motorolas better brand recognition), but in a surprising move it has ported the custom ZUK interface to Moto phones.

The Moto Z flagship and Moto Z Play mid-ranger specifically, currently being used by 25 beta testers. It seems that (for now at least) only Moto-branded phones sold in China will use the ZUI software.

Recently, Lenovo bumped up ZUI to version 2.5, which is based on Android 7.0 Nougat. Also, ZUK phones sold in India come with the Google launcher by default instead of the ZUI one. Still, Motos have a reputation of bloat-free software and this might change if Lenovo decides to run ZUI on Motorola phones globally.

Whether that happens or not, the Vibe sub-brand may not be long for this world – recent Lenovo phones are not labeled Vibe and the custom software they run may no longer be developed (switching instead to ZUI as well).

  1. If Lenovo is really doing this, then this must be the stupidest moves of all time. People buy Motorola for its pure-Android experience and changing that one main reason is destructive.

  2. We all knew this was going to happen, and yet it’s still horrible to see it

  3. Well that’s one way of ruining the Moto brand. Put some ugly iOS rip off UI on top of stock Android. I would say the only reason they would do that is because in China at least, most sold Android smartphones are those with some pre-installed iOS UI. In China the more a phone looks like an iPhone, the better it is sold.

  4. If Google really wanted to make its own branded phones they should have opted for Moto instead of selling it to Lenovo. Now Lenovo is slowly killing off Motorola. So Pixel is only way for those who want Pure Android experience.

  5. I think chinese never taste how delicious pure power of Vanilla Android UI.

  6. I have zuk z1 and i would definitely buy a lenovo or moto if they boot zui. Zui is really awesome and they have optimized zui for zui really really well.

  7. The communist dictators i China want to have spysoftware… preinstalled on every phone, laptop…, made in China!

  8. It is only for chinese variants, they somehow dont like pure android somehow
They always want their custom roms to resemble IOS somehow

China doesn’t have a motive to install spyware or things of the such, some disgruntled employees have out of spite maybe but not China the country . Virtually all computers, computer parts , and smartphones are made or assembled in China . You are not going to get away from buying a device that’s not at least some part passing through China.

Moto is now available everywhere & Chinese hate pure Android.
It also comes with Google play store, music, photos, etc… Where Google services are unavailable in there.
Lenovo is not even interested in putting zui & vibe ui seen on china in their phones selling outside china.
